Lessons for the Somalia humanitarian response
The humanitarian crisis in Somalia has continued to deteriorate. Five consecutive failed rainy seasons produced the worst drought in 40 years (UNICEF, 2022).

By mid 2023, more than 8 million people were projected to be food insecure with 727,000 facing catastrophic hunger levels ( OCHA , 2022-23).
Drought has led to disease. Conflict and insecurity continue to intensify vulnerabilities and exacerbate displacement.
The global humanitarian system still has the opportunity to avert a wider catastrophe in Somalia but only with adequate funding to heed previous lessons and avoid repeating previous mistakes.
