To contribute to the improvement of humanitarian assistance, GPPi conducts research, fosters global dialogue and evaluates humanitarian assistance programs around the world. The GPPi approach to humanitarian assistance corresponds with the institute’s broader mission, which is to develop innovative strategies for effective and accountable governance and to achieve lasting impact at the interface of the public sector, business and civil society. We firmly believe that international institutions and their members, both in humanitarian assistance and in other policy areas, can only perform and act in an effective, accountable way if they are learning institutions. This is why we focus on learning and innovation in our research and evaluations.

GPPi views humanitarianism as a global governance issue that national, international and private actors must address together, as well as one that must be integrated into the international debates about peace and security and development. We combine this governance-focused analytical approach with rigorous evaluation methodologies and participatory evaluation processes, focusing on utilization. In all of our assessments, we include clients, stakeholders and end-users, and use participatory methods such as classical beneficiary consultations and workshops, structured stakeholder dialogues, Open Spaces or Community Scorecard systems.
