The over-arching theme of the ECHO-funded project has been that of conflict

awareness and sensitivity. Such skills are considered to be at the basis of any discussion

regarding humanitarian aid in situations of conflict or potential conflict.

Moreover, given that a large percentage of humanitarian aid operations are undertaken

in conflict contexts, a common framework/point of reference for understanding

conflict among aid workers is deemed to be of great importance as humanitarian

NGOs continue to improve the quality and professionalism of their work.

It has not been the aim of this project to develop a new framework for dealing with

conflict, rather, the conference and this publication are attempts to raise awareness

of the different tools in existence and offer training guidelines which may be adopted

by NGOs striving towards good practice. Moreover, the partners developing the

project were extremely aware of the need to maintain a holistic perspective when

referring to humanitarian aid in conflict situations. Issues such as gender, the environment,

Sphere, human rights, impact assessments, etc., must always be borne in

mind as these issues are inter-twined and closely related.
