This in-depth study of Myanmar’s media landscape provides recommendations for crucial next steps in the country’s media reform process

This joint report by International Media Support and UNESCO launched in June 2016 comes at a pivotal time in Myanmar with the National League for Democracy-led government taking up the challenges of continuing a democratic transition to which independent media and a legal framework that protects access to information is so important.

The assessment is based on UNESCO’s Media Development Indicators, approved by its Member States, which offer a comprehensive framework by which to assess the media landscape in a country at any given time and to recommend possible steps to further develop a free, independent and pluralistic media landscape in line with international standards.

The research was carried out between May 2014 – April 2016 by IMS and a team of researchers from the National Management College (NMC), Department of Journalism in Myanmar. Each chapter of the report highlights the findings and provides a set of recommendations on the way forward in a view to contribute to the ongoing reform of the media sector in Myanmar.
