CARE Brasil AAR, Inundaciones y derrumbes Sao Goncalo, Río de Janeiro

1. In Brazil, the private sector is offering fundraising opportunities for humanitarian work and especially for disaster response, as proofed through the Haiti, Chile, and Brazil response contributions to CARE Brazil from the private sector. There is a need to map the private sector in general, and especially to identify and approach the decision makers to convert funding promises into reality in a timely manner. 2. Due to the fact that CARE Brazil only has started its humanitarian work, it is recommended starting the process of elaborating and maintaining an emergency preparedness plan EPP. The EPP would be elaborated and kept up to date by the staff, identifying key resources and decisions previously to disaster responses as for example intervention areas and sectors, draft response strategy, persons or consultants for recruitment, staffing, funding sources, local partners, local providers, and CI tools and training needs. This would also help to reduce the workload for staff during a disaster response (staff motivation and contribution was key for the overall successful response). 3. One of the main challenges during the disaster response of CARE Brazil was related to communications, and it is recommended to revise the flow of communication within CARE Brazil as well as towards CI and external actors, by taking into account the successful elements of giving visibility for poor forgotten areas as well as the challenge of raised expectations and ability of implementation
