Community Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM) Manual

Torqaid cbdrm workbook 1 png

The TorqAid - www.torqaid.com Community Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM) Manual was refined during Chris's (TorqAid CEOs) recent (Feb 2016) work in Vanuatu with the Anglican church. It is based on his earlier similar work with different NGOs in Laos, Afghanistan and India. The CBDRM Manual is a practical toolkit which can be utilised by humanitarian and development practitioners to work with communities to help them identify and respond to a range of hazards. Whilst the manual is in English, it could easily be translated into other languages. It uses a very participative approach, and includes maps, story-telling; the use of a number of diagrams (see separate TorqAid article on DRM diagrammatic framework); a brainstorming and ranking exercise using the Ten Seed Technique (TST); identification of a number of key challenges, and then practical work to look at causes into, effect from, and possible responses to these; identification of vulnerable groups and key stakeholders; and a village transect walk. Please feel free to use and share information about this toolkit. This approach will be mentioned in the online DRM workshop offered by TorqAid from the 25th July - 26th August 2016.
