GiveWell seeks charities that are "cost-effective" in the sense of saving or improving lives as much as possible for as little money as possible. There are many limitations to cost-effectiveness estimates, and they do not assess charities only—or primarily—based on their estimated cost-effectiveness. However, because different approaches to helping people can have extremely different costs, GiveWell makes cost-effectiveness estimates for their top charities.
