This case study identifies the lessons learned for the future of disaster preparedness in Thailand, after the 2004 tsunami. Slowly learning and trying to reorganize themselves, Nam Khem helped themselves by organizing temporary shelters, mobilizing community groups, promoting a saving scheme, setting up a community bank, promoting occupational development, reconstructing new houses and developing their community’s disaster risk management plan.
