As an archipelago in the Pacific, Vanuatu is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to weather-related disasters. Tropical cyclones represent one of the recurrent threats to the country, with Tropical Cyclone Harold causing significant impact to its population in 2020. Several cyclones struck the country at the beginning of 2023, yet Tropical Cyclone Lola caused concern when it arrived in October of that year because it was unseasonably early for the next cyclone season. These changing weather patterns underscore the threat of climate change to Vanuatu, which makes it one of the main reasons for implementing a nexus approach there. Climate change threatens to increase humanitarian needs and to disrupt Vanuatu’s service and tourist-based economy. While threats to peace and risk of inter-group violence and conflict is generally low in Vanuatu, gender-based violence as well as violence against children has been a concern in the country.

This Country Brief details the operationalization of the HDP nexus in Vanuatu and captures lessons learned.
