In urban settlements livelihood strategies can be complicated and confusing. Contexts are changing and uncertain, with accelerating urban growth, increasing crime, an ill-equipped public sector, and intense competition for limited resources. Household members employ complex and varied strategies, often living on credit, surviving and competing in markets, undertaking seasonal work and earning incomes in the informal economy.
