This independent final evaluation was carried out in South Sudan between 25/11/2016 – 17/01/2017, and was funded by OFDA. The project aimed to implement Inspiring Health Communities, integrating health, water supply, and market interventions to build resilience, in Aweil North and East of the Northern Bahr ell Ghazal area. The overall objective was to improve the community system and maintenance and contribute to meeting the goal of sustainable access to safe water for the entire population. The project was implemented within the sectors Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Food Security and Governance and Social Behaviour Change. Some recommendations include:
- Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Department should ensure that all water points are fenced while the Water Use Committee ensure that hygiene is maintained around the water points.
- Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Department should ensure a working operation and maintenance contact between the Mechanics Association (Service Provider) and Water Use Committees with a fixed maintenance schedule and repair of all breakdowns with standardised quarterly fees.
- The government through the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Department should increase its influence in regulation and enforcement. The Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Department’s role in regulation of water services and enforcement for payment of water fees need to be significantly developed.
