The reform of the Disaster Management (DM) Law in Indonesia provides Disaster Risk Reduction practitioners and development professionals with insight into the intrinsic linkages between the legal frameworks for DM, the place of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), andbroader development objectives such as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Practitioners working on DRR, either at national or at the sub-national level, can glean successful approaches from the process in Indonesia from 2005-2009. Both at the national and the sub-national level, lessons from Indonesia regarding coordination and multi-stakeholder participation in legal reform are valuable. Other countries that currently lack comprehensive DRR regulation or, those that are in the process of developing regulatory frameworks for DRR can learn from the approaches employed in Indonesia. Actors involved in the international risk reduction initiatives can learn from the diversity of experiences evident in the Indonesian DM Legal reform process. Whether intending to inspire programmes or inspire partners, DRR practitioners can map a path towards HFA compliance from the insights of the experiences outlined in this brochure
