Mali entered a period of crisis and insecurity in 2012 that affects the humanitarian component. Humanitarian assistance enables hundreds of thousands of people to survive, but the situation has worsened in some areas. Indeed, despite some progress in the implementation of the Algiers Peace Agreement, which was signed in 2015, insecurity and violence have spread from the northern regions to the Center, greatly increasing the vulnerability of refugees. populations in more than half of the country.

About 5.1 million people, or more than 27 per cent of the total population, live in areas affected by the security crisis, with food insecurity affecting almost one in five Malians (Humanitarian Overview 2018). The rate of severe acute malnutrition is 2.6%, well above the emergency threshold of the World Health Organization (WHO), set at 2% (SMART 2017). More alarming: between 2017 and 2018, the number of children suffering from severe acute malnutrition increased by more than 10%, from 142,000 to 165,000.
