The Center for Urban and Regional Studies (CEUR) of the University of San Carlos de Guatemala (USAC) has been a pioneering institution in research on topics such as the process of urbanization and urban growth in the Central American region and at the national level. Many of the phenomena of urban and regional character have been studied and debated for a long time inside the instition and in many cases expressed in the publications that have been made, since twenty-three years ago. The CEUR-USAC, at the end of 1997, had published 92 titles.
However, we have noticed that some categories, concepts, definitions and phenomena that are usually discussed within the Technical Body, have not been specified and presented in publications that generate or broaden a debate, otherwise necessary, not only at the level of the academics who dedicate themselves to the study of the urban and regional question, but especially at the level of public opinion, which increasingly begins to use certain terminology, without knowing well the phenomena to which they refer.
