Since 1995, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) has been affected by a series of large-scale disasters, including drought, floods, typhoons, landslides and tidal waves. These events have severely affected the lives and livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of people. The DPRK Red Cross has been one of the main providers of humanitarian assistance to vulnerable people most affected by the recent disasters. With assistance and support from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the DPRK Red Cross has provided food, shelter, medicine, blankets, quilts, clothes and other essential relief items to vulnerable households as well as medical institutions.
The Federation offered further technical support with two DP consultants, provided by the British Red Cross. It was proposed that the consultants should assist the DPR Department in reviewing the current programme and planning the next two years (2001/2002).
