The Sahel region and its 150 million inhabitants are still facing immense challenges today. These include violent extremism, climate change, and extreme poverty. A fourth, the demographic explosion that will see the population of the region double in the next twenty years, exacerbates the situation even more. Concerted actions on peace and security, trade, development, human rights and humanitarian action are needed to help communities in the region and their governments prevent further insecurity, poverty and migration and to achieve a more stable and prosperous future. This paper focuses on one of these key aspects, humanitarian action.

In the Sahel region, more than 30 million people are food insecure; one in five children under five is acutely malnourished; 4.9 million people have fled their homes.

With support and commitment from donors, aid provided by humanitarian actors has saved lives and reduced needs in the most vulnerable communities. But there are still challenges to overcome.
