Nepal's agriculture sector faces many climate related hazards including floods, draught, pests and diseases, deforestation and desertification. Improved farming techniques based on resilience to climate change and extreme weather patterns are required to be integrated into agriculture sectorial policies, plans, programmes and local actions. Between October 2015 and September 2019, FAO implemented a project to support Nepal’s agriculture sector by promoting urgent and immediate adaptation measures outlined in the National Adaptation Programme of Action (NAPA).
The project has contributed to the incorporation of climate change adaptation in relevant institutional structures in Nepal, awareness and knowledge management in project districts, and the economic and social empowerment of the most vulnerable farmer field school group members, specifically the women. However, a robust agriculture sector support mechanism will be required to sustain the impact in future.
