The relevance and effectiveness of humanitarian aid: Reflections about the relationship between providers and recipients

While they can strike suddenly or build over time, disasters - be they armed conflicts, natural calamities or pandemics - are defined by their disruptive and devastating impact on people's lives and livelihoods. Critical help to those affected is most often provided by their immediate and extended family and community, as well as by local institutions and authorities. These coping mechanisms may, however, be overwhelmed, creating crises where external aid to meet the acute, vital needs of "strangers" appears both legitimate and straightforward.
